{"id":20,"date":"2011-09-13T00:20:37","date_gmt":"2011-09-13T00:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nzvegan.co.nz\/?page_id=20"},"modified":"2011-09-13T00:20:37","modified_gmt":"2011-09-13T00:20:37","slug":"sanctuary-adoption-and-fostering","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/nzvegan.com\/?page_id=20","title":{"rendered":"Sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sanctuary, Adoption and Fostering:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Helping Animals <em>NOW!<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An integral part of recognising the moral personhood of all animals is providing victims of domestication, who are each and every one of them a\u00a0<a title=\"The moral personhood of all animals\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nzvegan.co.nz\/?page_id=18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moral person<\/a>, with love, protection and care for the duration of their lives, or otherwise directly supporting those victims by helping their caregivers to pay for food, shelter, veterinary care, transportation costs, adoption fees, etc. \u00a0NZ Vegan urges any advocate who is compelled to help animals NOW not to be fooled by deceitful \u201cwelfare\u201d campaigns that falsely promise to \u201chelp animals now\u201d but in fact <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abolitionistapproach.com\/the-four-problems-of-animal-welfare-in-a-nutshell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">do not at all<\/a>, \u00a0and instead to put that desire, energy, time and resources into adoption, fostering and sanctuary work*, as well as, of course, promoting veganism.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>*<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neighborhoodcats.org\/HOW_TO_WHAT_IS_TNR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release)<\/a>\u00a0work is also extremely important in that it prevents further victims of domestication from being brought into existence; and by acting as guardians for those who are re-released, you can be sure to be directly helping individuals in desperate need.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sanctuaries need to feed, shelter and care for their residents for the duration of their lives. \u00a0 Shelters also need to provide food, shelter and veterinary care, as well as have resources that enable fostering and adoption of the abandoned animals in order to find them safe homes. \u00a0As we know, unless the shelter in question is a no-kill shelter, if these individuals are not quickly adopted or fostered they are put to death, hence the word \u201cshelter\u201d is a misnomer. \u00a0These individuals are animals that can truly be helped NOW\u2014not to make their cages supposedly bigger, or the torture they endure supposedly \u201creduced\u201d, or the slaughter of them more \u201chumane\u201d\u2014but to actually save their lives and provide a forever home. \u00a0 There are millions of them, lives that can be saved, immediately and forever.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sadly, the position of many sanctuaries, even those run by vegans, is highly problematic in that they publicly support detrimental welfare campaigns and veganism is totally sidelined, which is astonishing given that they see first hand on a daily basis the victims of all exploitation\u2014including the so called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abolitionistapproach.com\/a-most-misleading-label\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freedom<\/a>\u201d farms and \u201cfree range\u201d facilities the very welfare campaigns they support are touting\u2014and the terrible suffering and trauma of the victims. \u00a0Most \u201cshelters\u201d are run by people who are themselves not vegan, and the majority of the individuals that end up in those facilities are put to death. \u00a0These rescue organisations hold\u00a0barbecues\u00a0in which they serve the corpses of other animals to raise money and celebrate their organisations. \u00a0Of course,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/miscdebris\/5914496937\/in\/contacts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fundraisers are worthwhile<\/a>\u00a0and can be used\u00a0to raise money for sanctuaries and abandoned animals, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/veganfeastkitchen.blogspot.com\/2009\/07\/vegan-barbecue-for-july-1st-and-4th.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vegan barbecues<\/a>\u00a0are fantastic and delicious!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Around the world the lack of vegan advocacy by sanctuaries is still basically the status quo, but for example\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/peacefulprairie.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary<\/a>\u00a0in Colorado promote a very strong vegan message.
