{"id":465,"date":"2011-09-16T13:27:35","date_gmt":"2011-09-16T13:27:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nzvegan.com\/?page_id=465"},"modified":"2011-09-16T13:27:35","modified_gmt":"2011-09-16T13:27:35","slug":"protein","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/nzvegan.com\/?page_id=465","title":{"rendered":"Protein"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Plants have protein, so vegans get their protein from plant sources.\u00a0 It is a myth that humans need a large amount of protein, in fact it is now recognised that most people eat <em>too much<\/em> protein, or at least more than they need.\u00a0 By eating a variety of whole plant foods, humans can easily meet their daily protein needs.\u00a0 The recommended dietary allowance (or RDA) of protein for humans depends on physical activity levels, pregnancy and other factors, including age.\u00a0 For example, the NZ Ministry of Health Food and Nutrition Guidelines for Healthy Adolescents from 1998 states: \u201cPeak requirements of protein will coincide with peak energy requirements and therefore can be summarised as 12\u201314 percent of energy requirements. Protein intake is recommended to be in the range of 0.8\u20131.6 g\/kg body weight.
